Product Branding

Help Desk, by Christopher B. Wright

Comic Transcript

ALICE: So Alex, if you were a member of the 15-24 age demographic, what products would you want branded in our game?

ALEX: Branded?

ALICE: Sure. We're going to be featuring some products in our game... shoes, sodas, clothing... you know, product placement, like they do in the movies. We've got a huge list of advertisers who want in, and I need to figure out which ones to use.

ALEX: Uhhh... This sounds like a bad idea to me.

ALICE: Why is that?

ALEX: Well, UberQuest is a fantasy game, right? Advertising modern products in a fantasy game will wreck the feel of the game for a lot of people.

ALICE: But the sponsors are paying us money.

ALEX: But if you destroy the illusion of the fantasy world you're creating, people will become dissatisfied and stop playing the game.

ALICE: But the sponsors are paying us money.

ALEX: But the success or failure of the game ultimately rests on your target audience BUYING it, and if you alienate them, they won't.

ALICE: But the sponsors are paying us money.

ALEX: Nevermind.
