Misc: Oh Happy, Happy Tax Day

My taxes are all taken care of, though I'm still feeling the sting (because renovations to our house and our move last year required that I withdraw from my IRA we were hit with Capital Gains like nobodies business).

Here's hoping those of you going through the most wonderful time of the year (for the Federal Government, at any rate) come out better than that.

We got hit...

I'm supposed to be federally tax exempt as a college student, but somehow I'm only getting $66 back of the approximately $300 that was taken out of my paychecks. No payroll department at any company can seem to get the whole "full time college students are tax exempt" thing right, even when I fill out a W4 stating EXEMPT when I first start there.

My parents are getting hit for $6000 this year and somehow another $3000 from 2005 that the IRS never mentioned in 2006 or 2007.

... ouch.

They were hit hard.

We had to shell out $1300 to the federal government in Capital Gains taxes but we're making up most of that in state refunds, so essentially we broke even.

But hey, we're all getting checks for $800! So everything's great!

...

(... thought I should add... that was sarcasm.)

And for the old folks....

And those of us who are old retired people are shelling out to BOTH the Feds and the State because nothing is withheld from our non-paychecks -- so everything we get in retirement pensions has to be estimated for quarterly payments. The price of laziness (not making those quarterly payments) is dear, indeed. No matter what age or station in life, the taxman cometh -- and he cometh for thee and for me!
